Weihenstephan Weizen Clone

Wheat beer is something I’ve always been a massive fan of, so naturally when I started brewing a decent wheat beer recipe was something that was high on my list of things to have a go at. I think my third brew was the Northern Brewer wheat beer kit and that actually produced very drinkable results. So much so that I made it a second time! Once I made the move to all grain, I tried the Paulaner clone from a clone recipe book but to be honest it wasn’t great, so when I came across this recipe online I thought it was about time to give it another dig.

Beer Engines and Bag in a Box

Bottling home brew is, if you’re making any kind of volume, a lengthy and tedious process. Based purely on the volume of posts on home brew groups on Facebook, I would guess that the most popular alternative way of storing and dispensing home brew has probably got to be the corny keg. There’s way less cleaning and sanitising involved and they are much quicker to fill. Indeed, commercial craft beer generally tends to be served from the keg. I personally prefer cask beer and so I was super excited to see a post a while back where a chap had hooked up a beer engine to something I had never really heard of – bag in a box – to produce what looked very similar to a pint of delicious cask ale.

Oatmeal Stout

Break Stuff

This post wasn’t meant to be about oatmeal stout, it was meant to be about making the Landlord clone, Grenadier. Unfortunately, however, that brew was afflicted by the same issue as the last batch of La Marmotte d’Or so there’s no post about either brew! Pouring away two batches of 35 litres of beer is pretty heart breaking. Annoyingly the Marmotte d’Or was the first brew I had made to go through the beer engine (did I not mention that I’d invested in a beer engine?), and whilst it looked amazing it tasted revolting. I’d originally thought it was caused by an issue with the tap on the fermenter, but as I changed that for the Grenadier I am more inclined to believe it was sanitiser related.

Boltmaker Clone

I’m a big Timothy Taylor fan and I’ve brewed a clone version of Landlord (aka Grenadier) on a few occasions now which is rather delicious. Even the old man is a fan! I am more than partial to a pint of Boltmaker, having first sampled it a few years ago off the back of it being named Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival in 2014. The Head of Steam in Leeds (the old one, not the new one) serve a very good pint which, thanks to Covid, I haven’t enjoyed for a long time now.

Imperial Oatmeal Stout

I’ve still got over 120 bottles of home brew in the garage and with half an eye on it being in a reasonable state to drink at Christmas I’ve decided that it was about time I got around to having a go at making an imperial oatmeal stout.

Whilst I’ve got a reasonable idea what I’m doing when it comes to brewing sensible strength beer, this is my first attempt at a strong number. There’s a huge amount of conflicting advice on the web, so I decided to trust my gut and go with it.
